A Song of Flowers
For man, as for flower and beast and bird, the supreme triumph is to be most vividly, most perfectly alive.
- David H. Lawrence
While we travelled the summer of 2006, hiking and exploring, Bethany was quietly photographing flowers.
Hundreds and hundreds of flowers.
I would get my photo gear out, spend time setting up a tripod, attach my big camera, compose a picture, twiddle knobs and settings, and finally make an exposure. Then I'd bracket the exposure. Then I'd try a slightly different composition. And so on. Meanwhile, somewhere off behind me, Bethany was flitting from flower to flower like a butterfly happily sampling color and nectar. Like a fairy with a taste for petals. Her little point-and-shoot was a VW bug to my Hummer of a camera, nimble and featherweight.
Over the summer, she captured an astonishing array of wildflowers from many locations and ecozones.
I can only name a handful of the flower species. I'm a trees kind of guy. But I can call the pictures she found beautiful and moving.
Each flower like a note from a song composed across the American West.
